Coming soon to computers everywhere, a world's fair
Article Abstract:
Carl Malamud is organizing a digital world's fair in an effort to publicize a new 'Internet railroad' that will give the Internet multimedia extensions to more than 100 countries. The Internet railroad will carry full-motion video, sound and computer data at speeds reaching 155 million bps, and Malamud hopes the railroad will remain even after the world's fair closes. The fair is scheduled to open on Jan 1, 1996 and consists of a number of digital exhibitions that will include live events as well as recorded ones. The Japanese government has already donated two terabytes of computer disk space, two high-speed backbone networks and an IBM supercomputer to the effort. Malamud has help from experts around the world, and he believes that his approach of building public works projects with donated funds is a better way to build the Internet than through the high-risk initial public offerings of companies with Internet-related products.

Discovery of Internet flaws is setback for on-line trade
Article Abstract:
A group of researchers describe the Internet's underlying structure as fundamentally unsound for commerce. The report centers around the Network File System (NFS) protocol, which allows users to download files but cannot notify them whether the file has been altered in transit from the original sender. The flaw is not surprising, considering that the Internet was originally intended as a method for exchanging academic research, and some Internet experts believe that more flaws will be found as Internet use expands. Analysts believe that hardware and software makers are not putting enough effort into making existing security products for the Internet accessible to the less technically adept user. The report underlines the vulnerability of using credit cards on the Internet.
