Protecting youngsters from Internet dangers
Article Abstract:
Cyberspace is becoming a dangerous place for children. An increasing amount of people are using the Internet to lure children into sex and to distribute pornography. Parents have the primary responsibility for ensuring that children are safe. Parents must monitor their childrens' Internet activity and discuss the information that is accessed. A pamphlet from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children advises that personal information should not be sent to public forums such as a chat rooms, nor should it be sent over E-mail unless the recipient is known. Users should ignore messages that are obscene, belligerent or otherwise threatening. The major online services allow households to filter access to Internet sites. Software is available that will prevent users from accessing predefined sites. Such software can also filter access based on a list of prohibited words.

Steve Case at a crossroad: America Online is a leader, but he's watching the rear-view mirror
Article Abstract:
America Online faces an uncertain future, and Pres and CEO Steve Case is banking on interest-based communities to keep it alive. America Online is the largest online service carrier, with 3.3 million subscribers in 1995, twice its previous customer base. The company's stock is enjoying an upswing. But challenges are coming from the release of Microsoft Network, which may have as many as nine million subscribers in its first year. The large telecommunications companies are launching services that will test America Online's staying power. The Internet's popularity and the increase of products that allow consumers to directly access the Internet easily reduce the need for intermediaries like America Online. The company also faces questions about its accounting practices, and more conventional accounting shows the company breaking even rather than profiting.
