Coming to famous theme parks: troubleland
Article Abstract:
Seagram Co.'s Universal Studios Inc. and Walt Disney Co. are suffering from a period of slow attendance during the peak summer season at their southern California theme parks. Industry analysts have said that the success of Disney's new Animal Kingdom theme park has come at the expense of the company's three other Florida theme parks, which have seen higher than projected declines in attendance. Disney also has suffered poor sales in its home-video and consumer products businesses due to the growing Asian economic crisis.

MGM to acquire 1,300 PolyGram films from Canada's Seagram for $235 million
Article Abstract:
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. will increase its film library by 1,300 titles by purchasing part of PolyGram NV's library from Seagram. MGM's library will be the world's largest, 5,200 titles; however, it is not clear as to whether distribution of these titles will have to be shared with Warner Bros. because of a 1990 distribution agreement which doesn't expire until 2003. MGM is paying $235 million for films that include "Fargo" and "The Graduate."

Seagram considers sale of film unit of Polygram and real-estate assets
Article Abstract:
Seagram Co. is studying the possibility of selling off some of its noncore assets and real estate in an attempt to produce up to $750 million in funds. The funds would be used to lower debts. The company is considering such a move just after PepsiCo Inc.'s $3.3 billion acquisition of its Tropicana juice business. Seagram is also asking for offers for its PolyGram NV's film unit.
