Commonalities in reengineered business processes: models and issues
Article Abstract:
Formal mathematical models are used to evaluate assertions of system superiority using business process reengineering principles. The models focus on transaction processing, therefore shifting concentration to systems with comparable total resource capacity. Nine commonalities in reengineered business processes are examined, namely, combination of tasks into one, worker decision-making capability, natural implementation of process steps, multiple process versions, work concentration in needy areas, reduction of checks and controls, minimal reconciliation, single point of contact provided by case managers and dominance of hybrid centralized/decentralized operations. Although reengineering principles are not valid for all scenarios, they significantly aid in the determination of the most promising approaches to structure transaction-processing systems.
