Compound sets in mathematical programming modeling languages
Article Abstract:
The concept of an algebraic modeling language which uses conventions of common algebraic notation to define objectives and limitations in a structure that computers can process. Since algebraic notations were not originally developed for mathematical programming, some difficulties may be encountered in indexing of model component collections. The study assesses difficulties encountered in applying two algebraic conventions wherein each model has a fixed number of indices and wherein the sequence of indices is significant to their meaning. Compensating extensions to these algebraic notations are then analyzed in comparison with human capacity for understanding, maintaining and validating model structures. The study finds that modeling language presents complexities such as the need for more keystrokes and masks the individual atomic indices in assignments and equations.

The effects of human resource management systems on economic performance: an international comparison of U.S. and Japanese plants
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to directly compare the work practices and performance outcomes for a sample of US and Japanese manufacturing establishments employing a common production technology. Analysis of a unique body of data personally gathered from 41 steel production lines found that, on average, Japanese lines are 5% more productive than US lines. US lines which employ a full set of innovative human resource (HR) practices that are comparable to those of the Japanese lines are a productive as the Japanese lines. The set of production lines adopting innovative HR practices, both in Japan and the US, are on average 7% more productive than the US lines using traditional HR practices. Innovative HR management systems caused quality gains to accompany productivity gains.
