Compaq plans to unveil pact with Microsoft; technology-sharing accord aims to boost forms in emerging PC lines
Article Abstract:
Compaq and Microsoft Corp will announce in mid-Apr 1993 a wide-ranging technology agreement that reportedly includes collaborating on new products and possibly new standards in the areas of multiprocessing computers, portable computers and pen-based computers. The alliance, which could be the closest between Microsoft and a hardware vendor, will mark a significant enhancement to the the long-standing technology partnership between the two companies. Observers say that Microsoft has been particularly upset by the slow development of pen-based computers capable of running Microsoft's Pen Windows operating system. Microsoft is also expected to announce that Computer Associates will develop a Microsoft Windows NT version of its UniPack mainframe software. Microsoft also announces that it has shipped 25 million copies of Microsoft Windows.

RealNetworks, IBM to deliver music on Web
Article Abstract:
RealNetworks and IBM have agreed to a technology exchange to create an application which will enable consumers to download copy-proof music files over the Internet. RealNetworks has about 55 million registered users. Its 'narrowband' technology works over conventional phone lines, allowing users to download audio files, such as music or radio shows, over the Web. Typically, these files have been stored in the RealNetworks file format at various content providers' Web sites. In conjunction with the recording industry, IBM has been testing on broadband delivery systems on a limited basis in San Diego. The partnership with RealNetworks will give IBM access to more customers, while IBM will provide RealNetworks with its 'Madison' system's large scale storage capabilites and secure transaction technology.
