Compaq readies desktop computer line aimed at improving corporate networks
Article Abstract:
Compaq is developing a series of business desktop systems that will include built-in trouble-shooting and management features and will be aimed at improving performance on large corporate networks. The development represents a change in Compaq's strategy from trying to offer lower prices to offering systems with extra features. The new system will offer antivirus and antihacker security features, utilities that allow network administrators to monitor the network and tools that provide early warnings of potential hard disk failures. The first systems in the 'intelligent manageability' line will feature Pentium microprocessors and are due to be unveiled on Mar 8, 1995. Analysts praise Compaq's development effort and say that the company has a several month lead on its competitors. Other analysts say that it is still unclear if Compaq's system or a competing product will become the industry standard for this type of system.

When a TV joins a PC, will anybody be watching?
Article Abstract:
Computer manufacturers are preparing products that combine the functionality of PCs with the entertainment aspects of TVs, envisioning a line of products that blend Web access, stereo equipment and video-disk players in one unit. However, concerns regarding the high-cost and technological difficulties associated with the new machines are casting a degree of skepticism over the prospects of these units achieving mainstream acceptance. The high-speed, large bandwidth communication-connections that are required for the transmission of such massive amounts of data to typical homes do not presently exist. Analysts do not expect such transmission technology to be readily available before the year 2000. However, interactive multimedia Web software titles should be introduced en masse by 1997, and digital video disk technology may also spur sales of Web-compatible TVs.
