Thomson, Compaq planning to unveil device combining TV and PC features
Article Abstract:
Thomson and Compaq, the largest TV and computer makers, have introduced the $5,000 PC Theatre into several cities in the US. The device is a combination of companies' products, a modified Compaq PC with a 36-inch monitor. This machine marks another step in the move toward home electronics becoming completely digital. The PC Theatre is the result of Thomson and Compaq's 18-month project. The two companies are on opposite sides of the debate between making digital TV's compatible with the monitors on existing computers and making them sharper, with higher definition. While working together on the PC Theatre, Thomson benefitted from Compaq's quick product-design skills and Compaq learned how to make products simplier from Thomson.

Compaq to unveil 3 personal computers, posing big sales challenge for dealers
Article Abstract:
Compaq Computer Corp will go ahead with its plans to introduce three new high-end microcomputers despite the poor sales performance of its Systempro 386 line. The three new machines will be the $13,999 Intel 80486-based Deskpro 486/33L, the $9,999 Intel 80386-based Deskpro 386/33L and the $20,999 Intel 80486-based Systempro 486/33L. Analysts expect the machines to be at the forefront of price/performance in their class. Compaq's main problem will be selling the high-priced machines through its dealer channel. Many analysts wonder if the dealers are qualified to sell high-end file servers such as the Systempro to large corporations.
