IBM, Compaq set data-storage alliance

Compaq Computer and International Business Machines are spending $1 billion to came their data-storage systems compatible in an attempt to compete with the dominant EMC Corp. The alliance will allow the two companies to resell each other's equipment and software to joint customers and to go after new markets. They will also share engineering efforts. EMC, which holds about 35% of the data-storage system and services market calls the alliance desperate.

As H-P CEO Carly Fiorina tries to quell investor skepticism about the planned merger with Compac Computer Corp., several H-P executives, in charge of various areas, are juggling the logistics of the merger. Webb McKinney, H-P's computing-systems business manager is in charge of running the combined PC businesses of the two companies. The entire transition team is run by Compaq CFO Jeff Clarke and H-P business-customer-organization head Webb McKinney. The two executives will handle salary integration, e-mail-address integration and will decide which businesses, projects and employees will be terminated.
