Compaq reports small profit before charges

Compaq Computer Corp. posted a moderate profit for the second-quarter of 1998 before charges. The company posted $32 million before charges during the quarter. Compaq also announced that its inventory troubles had come to an end. These troubles had seriously affected Compaq's profitability and revenue during the first half of 1998. Compaq's acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp. in June 1998 greatly helped the company's quarterly figures. Digital posted revenues of $1.1 billion during the three weeks leading up to June 30, 1998.

Data General expects $125 million charge for restructuring

Data General Corp. announced that it is predicting a $125 million charge for the 1998 fiscal third-quarter that ends on June 27, 1998. The company has been struggling to regain its profit margins.
