Competing strategy programs
Article Abstract:
Scientific philosopher Imre Lakatos has developed of model of scientific development founded on the notion of competing scientific research programs. This model is based on his believe that science is the product of a comparison of one theory to another. This model is adapted to the context of strategy formation. At a Lakatosian organization, management relies not on a single corporate strategy but on a set of two or more competing strategy programs. This approach can help promote strategic clarity, neutralize the influence of psychological and cultural factors that demand conformity, facilitate organizational learning, and minimize political resistance to change. Despite the potential benefits of this competing strategy programs, their efficacy may be constrained by the prevailing corporate culture so that the very systems of management end up suppressing creativity.
