Competitiveness through management of diversity: effects on stock price valuation
Article Abstract:
This study's premise is that firms that can lower their costs and enhance their differentiation through the effective management of their human resources have a competitive advantage. Using data from 1986 through 1992, we examined the impact that announcements of U.S. Department of Labor awards for exemplary affirmative action programs upon the stock returns of winning corporations and the effect that announcements of damage awards from the settlement of discrimination lawsuits had on the stock returns of corporations. The results suggest that announcements of awards may be associated with competitive advantage and that discrimination-related announcements may be associated with inability to achieve such advantage. Competition, cooperation, and the search for economic rents: a syncretic model
Article Abstract:
In this article, the notion of syncretic rent-seeking behavior is proposed to explain how firms generate economic rents through competition and cooperation. Previously, competition and cooperation have been viewed largely as opposite ends of a single continuum. By conceptualizing competition and cooperation as distinct but interrelated dimensions, we develop a four-cell typology of rent-seeking strategic behaviors. Propositions linking syncretic rent-seeking behavior, organizational competencies, and business performance are offered to guide future theory development and research efforts. Paradox and theorizing within the resource-based view
Article Abstract:
The resource-based view (RBV) is attuned to addressing the paradoxical challenges of creating and sustaining superior firm performance and argue that researchers can work within and through RBV paradoxes to advance greater understanding. Paradoxes serve as conceptual tools for understanding the surrounding world and discuss the utility of the paradoxical perspective in furthering and energizing the RBV scholarship and strategic management.
