Composite strategy: the combination of collaboration and competition
Article Abstract:
Managers should not be coerced into choosing between a collaborative approach and a competitive approach as the road to take in deciding their companies' strategy. Neither a totally collaborative stance nor a completely competitive position is the best approach for many firms. Unfortunately, management gurus who are supporters of either the collaborative or the competitive stance are doing exactly this. An alternative to this all-or-nothing approach is one that combines the competitive and collaborative strategies. The blending of these two elements should be done in a fashion that lets them interact in a mutually beneficial manner. The industry environment of the firm should be considered in developing a mixed-strategy approach to arrive at the most appropriate combination.
