Computers get powerful 'hearing' aids: improved methods of voice recognition
Article Abstract:
Voice recognition is an advancing technology capable of improving an organization's productivity and services. Research firm Voice Information Associates Inc anticipates that the speech recognition hardware and software market will reach $233 million in 1992; the market is expected to reach $576 million by 1995 and be worth $1 billion by the year 2000. Industry leaders such as Apple and AT&T are already planning to market speech recognition systems. New Jersey-based Holy Name Hospital employs a $27,000 speech system from Kurzweil Applied Intelligence Inc that automatically fills-out emergency medical charts. The system costs less than hiring clerical workers, and pays for itself in six months. The Kurzweil system consists of an IBM PC-based microcomputer equipped with a phone receiver rather than a keyboard, and can process words spoken at normal conversational speed. Speech systems generally process words via a microphone or telephone receiver, and translate the words into 10 ms time 'slices.'

Cellular phone industry seeks bids for network
Article Abstract:
The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Assn is set to ask for bids for a signaling network that will enable all cellular phone subscribers to receive calls from anywhere in the United States. The winning contract could be extremely lucrative, as so-called roaming revenue, generated by calls from customers who roam into a rival cellular phone company's territory, is growing rapidly. Roaming revenue accounted for $436.7 million of the cellular industry's $3.6 billion in 1st half 1992 revenue, up 45 percent from the year-earlier period. Presently, cellular subscribers cannot receive calls when they travel outside their home territory. The association will solicit bids from 42 networking companies, including Sprint Corp, MCI Communications Corp and AT and T. The winning network is scheduled to begin operation in late 1993.

Standards set for data-voice phone service
Article Abstract:
The Corporation for Open Systems, a nonprofit standards body, announces it has adopted specific standards for integrating voice and data communications over a single telephone wire. The standards are those proposed by Bell Communications Research Inc, the research unit of the Bell regional holding companies. The standards will cover the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) service that is expected to be available across the country by 1992. ISDN technology is already being used by many corporations over private network lines. The benefits of the technology include lower entry costs because existing phone lines can be used as well as the potential for offering cable television, computer imaging services and modem-like capabilities over normal telephone connections.
