Consultant's call; Lawrence Vanston makes some pretty bold predictions for the future of telecommunications. He has been right before
Article Abstract:
Wireless providers could siphon off 50% of local telephone carriers's revenue by 2005, according to Lawrence K. Vanston, pres of consulting firm Technology Futures. Vanston has conducted industry research since 1985 for most of the Baby Bells, GTE and Sprint. His 1995 forecast of 48.9 million cellular-phone users by 1997 was closer to the 55.3 million amount than most other predictions. Other Vanston projections say the Baby Bells will experience negative cash flow by 2010 unless they embrace wireless technology and diversify their services into areas such as data traffic. Almost 90% of all US households will be able to download information at 100 million bps over their own digital data pipelines. Vanston discusses competition, the emergence of wireless technology and inexpensive local calling, as well as the future of competitive local-exchange carriers and Bell companies.

New 'sophisticated' computer virus attacks MCI networks, is contained
Article Abstract:
MCI WorldCom's networks were attacked by what security experts describe as a sophisticated, unusually dangerous virus. MCI says the virus, which was discovered on Dec 17, has been contained, adding that no customers have been inconvenienced. The virus, called 'Remote Explorer,' runs on Microsoft's Windows NT operating system. It takes control of a computer systems administrator and proceeds to scramble files into unreadable code. A security expert says nothing like Remote Explorer has previously been enountered. He describes the virus as a new strain that propagates without user interaction. He says the virus represents a sophisticated attack and says the person or people responsible for it understand networking and business processes.

FCC chides SBC for giving agency false information
Article Abstract:
The Federal Communications Commission has censured SBC Communications Inc. for giving false information as regulators were considering whether to let SBC offer long-distance service in Oklahoma and Kansas. The decision may make it harder for SBC to obtain permission to offer long-distance service in California. The FCC probe found that one SBC manager lied to the FCC, but that most other misstatements were due to carelessness on the part of SBC.
