Context and antecedents of information utility at the R&D/marketing interface
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive empirically-based model of the communication interface between R&D and marketing was developed. A non-experimental critical incident technique was employed to test this causal model of the antecedents of information utility at the R&D/marketing interface. Data were collected from 386 team members of 80 new product innovation teams in 40 companies. Findings showed that the relevance and the credibility of the message significantly influenced the perception of information utility. Also, the comprehensibility of the message moderately affected the perception of information utility while novelty did not have a major impact. The study also revealed that the quality of communication channel employed significantly influenced the perception of the message. Implications for future research and application are discussed.

Architectural redesign, interpersonal communication, and learning in R&D
Article Abstract:
A Belgian company architecturally redesigned its facility for its research and development with the expectation that this would increase interpersonal communication. Part of the expectation was an increase in both technological and market learning. Although there was no increase in the frequency of interpersonal communication, its quality improved and while technological information transfer did not increase either, market information sharing did. Results of the architectural redesigning implied improved functional linkages and increased focus on the customer.
