Coping with change at Martin Industries
Article Abstract:
Martin Industries Inc have successfully changed from using a limited accounting system to using a new system based on variable costing. The new system's success is based on: recognizing a need for change; gaining top management support; developing an appropriate educational program; and developing new reports. The change of systems was aided by the use of an ongoing educational system featuring internal publications and seminars by an outside consultant. The new accounting system has provided senior management with valuable reports including: comparative balance sheets; comparative income statements; performance analyses; cash flow analyses; and accounts receivable-aging analyses.

Europe 1992: the single market
Article Abstract:
The impending single European market of 1992 signals changes in the conduct of business in Europe through the introduction of competition and the removal of physical, technical, and fiscal trade barriers. The single European market offers great opportunity for US businesses with operations in Europe, which have the advantages of: an integrated home base; pan-European planning; and flexibility. In order to better position themselves in order to exploit new opportunities, US businesses should consider: rationalization of production facilities; centralization of marketing; and preparations for the increased involvement of European trade unions in operations.
