Court spells out rules for finding sex harassment
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court, in two 7-2 rulings, was praised by private companies and civil rights groups for clarifying sexual harassment law and limiting potential litigation for those firms with viable anti-sexual harassment policies. In the past 12 years, following the court's first ruling against sexual harassment in the workplace, there have been a number of lower court rulings that have allowed wide interpretation of sexual harassment law. The court established a clear standard for the rights and responsibilities of companies and employees in its interpretation of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The court set new harassment rules, including holding employers responsible for harassment by its supervisors and providing protection to employers with effective sexual harassment policies.
