Cross-cultural implications of professional/management conflict
Article Abstract:
Differences in the interpretation of the concept of professionalism due to cultural factors have resulted in conflicts between management and professionals regarding organizational practices. Conflict stems from management's perceptions of professionals as employees in the areas concerning professionals' technical expertise, tendency to maintain and protect the autonomous nature of their work environment, the tendency to maintain a strong affiliation and commitment to their profession, and their strong adherence to standards of conduct and code of ethics. This professional/management conflict is predominant in American and British corporate cultures. The mediation of such conflict between management and professionals would call for a comprehensive strategy that would establish mutual and compatible objectives for both parties while allowing them to maintain their distinct allegiances.

Creating a quality culture
Article Abstract:
Total Quality Management can only succeed if there is a supportive corporate culture in which the continuous improvement of the company's products and services is the goal of all organizational members. Everyone has to have a passion for excellence and must be committed to eliminating all costs that do not add value to a service or business process. A vision is essential to the development of a quality-oriented organizational culture. 'Vision' has been defined as the chief executive's conception of a realistic, credible and desired future for the organization. A mission statement, on the other hand, is a tool used to communicate the company's change of direction to its employees. A study of four New Zealand organizations with mission statements suggests several characteristics of an effective mission statement. These include specificity, honesty, input from staff and cultural fit.
