Danny Hill bids for SA prize
Article Abstract:
Mining entrepreneur Danny Hill and his company Musgrave Block Holdings are attempting to pursue a joint venture with the Pitjantjatjara Mining Co. to win rights to explore and mine for resources on the Pitjantjatjara Musgrave Block aboriginal lands in South Australia. Government and industry approval would give the joint venture rights up to 25% of any lands granted. The Pitjantjatjara Mining Co. has about 20,000 kilometers of land under exploration application, more than 25% of the Musgrave Block.

Australia's mining industry is facing an employee safety crisis with continued high death tolls. The Western Australia Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce found a connection between higher death tolls and contract mining, along with the decrease of union influence, inadequate supervision and lack of training. Cost and production pressures compromise standards.

Dollar's dive is paying Pasminco handsomely

Zinc producer, Pasminco, could has profits of $51 million Australian in 1998 as a result of the weaker Australian dollar. Many base metal companies in Australia are expected to do well as a result of the weaker Australian dollar in addition to their resistance to hedge heavily. Demand for base metals is expected to increase after the Asian economies recover.
