Cray Research, Bolt Beranek may link up
Article Abstract:
Cray Research Inc, the supercomputer manufacturer, is seeking 'some sort of business arrangement' with Bolt Beranek & Newman Inc, which develops data communications networks and supercomputers. Talks reportedly cover a range of options from technology transfers to a possible acquisition. Cray is responding to a technological revolution that is taking place in the supercomputer industry. Small companies are introducing 'massively parallel' computers that use hundreds or thousands of linked microprocessors to achieve speeds that outperform Cray's fastest machines. Cray is, therefore, exploring ways to enter into massively parallel processing. Bolt Beranek has been manufacturing massively parallel computers for about seven years. Cray's stock closed at $37.25 a share on Jun 5, 1991, up $1. Bolt Beranek closed at $7.75, up 12.5 cents.

Data General to sell new storage system in versions for other vendors' machines
Article Abstract:
Data General Corp will market versions of its Clariion disk array system that are compatible with Unix-based computers manufactured by HP, Unisys Corp, Sun Microsystems Inc and IBM. Previous versions of the Clariion array were compatible only with Data General's Aviion line of midrange computers. The Clariion line is based on redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID), a storage technology that is gaining in popularity and provides a high-level of data security. Prices for the Clariion line begin at $28,000 for an array of five 500Mbyte hard disks. Industry analysts note that Data General has faced financial difficulties and that the new Clariion marketing strategy could increase earnings.
