Dell's net surges 47% to beat forecasts; firm says PC sales topped Compaq for first time; revenue advances 42%
Article Abstract:
Dell Computer Corp.'s second-quarter profit rose 47%, with revenue rising 42% to $6.14 billion. In a market of diving prices for personal computers, Dell's selling price fell only 8%. Chairman Michael S. Dell partially credits the profit from the company's expanding Internet sales. And the demand for PC's is still very strong. And, competitors Compaq Computer and International Business Machines are focusing on profits to help their falling bottom lines, not market share.
