Describing the issues of knowledge management in R&D: towards a communication and analysis tool
Article Abstract:
A descriptive model of knowledge management, the knowledge base and knowledge accumulation and dissemination activities is developed. The model is used to study knowledge management in the Dutch multinational and chemical manufacturer Chemco. In particular, it is used to describe Chemco's overall business strategy, map its knowledge base and knowledge push and pull activities, map characteristics of the company's R&D strategy, identify bottlenecks and support formulation of improvement plans. Findings indicate the model's usefulness in describing the link between knowledge management and R&D.

Planning for dominance: a strategic perspective on the emergence of a dominant design
Article Abstract:
A strategic framework was formulated which allows R&D planners to systematically study the non-technological factors that may hinder the commercial success of an innovative technology. The framework shows that intra-organizational forces, interactive learning between organizations and socio-political forces are non-technological factors that influence the emergence process of a dominant design. The framework, which illustrates the emergence of a dominant design, suggests that the success of a corporate strategy depends on the effectiveness of its implementation.

A reflection on the major themes of the 1997 R&D management conference
Article Abstract:
Research and development (R&D) strategies have evolved since its inception in the 1960s. While more companies are integrating R&D strategies into business planning, there is also an increasing trend towards external R&D sourcing and partnership. Moreover, market globalization and the complexity of innovation processes also create a need for R&D resources that are also globalized. Consequently, R&D professionals need to respond to these changes through proper integration of technology planning and industrial management.
