Detroit's Lead Isn't Long-Lived
Article Abstract:
Profits and sales for the United States automobile industry were high in 1983. This will not make the United States the world leader in automobile manufacturing, since many cars and trucks are being made in the United States by the Japanese. Japanese made cars still cost less than American built cars. The good times for United States automakers are partially due to import restrictions. It is predicted that the Japanese will gain a large market share of the United States automobile market by 1990. The United Auto Workers (UAW) wants legislation requiring the Japanese to make their cars here, using UAW labor.
