Dow Jones and Nynex to develop service for transmission of video information
Article Abstract:
Dow Jones and Company Inc and Nynex Corp are working together to develop a video information system to transmit information over the Nynex telephone network, providing both real-time and stored data to their customers. The prototype service being developed will use fiber optic links to television sets or workstations and provide videocassette-quality transmissions. Nynex's network reaches 12 million customers in the northeastern US. Dow Jones will create programs that are either transmitted in real time or stored and updated. The prototype will determine how much the service will cost and the types of programs it will provide. The Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984 may be an impediment to the service, since that act keeps cable companies and telephone companies from crossing into each other's business. In addition, the 1982 break up of the long distance telephone systems will complicate carrying the service out of the local area.

Clones besiege profit margins of Sound Blaster's parent; Singapore's Creative Technology faces fight for PC sound-card crown
Article Abstract:
Creative Technology Ltd, which established the market for microcomputer sound cards and has sold more than 2.5 million of the add-on cards, faces stiff competition. Media Vision Technology Inc, which is second in the market, is getting better reviews from both computer magazines and investors. Firms such as Aztech Systems Pte Ltd which make inexpensive compatibles, are also gaining market share at Creative Technology's expense. The company currently has about half the sound-card market, down from three-fifths in the spring of 1993. Creative Technology's stock has tumbled from a high of $38.50 per share in Feb 1993 to $22.75 on Aug 24. Wall Street is troubled by the recent resignation of CFO Kenneth J. McEwan and the Apr resignation of the chief executive at Creative Technology's US unit, Creative Labs Inc. Both Media Vision and many analysts expect gross margins to fall as sound cards become commodity items.
