Dragon Systems, a former little guy, gets ready for market
Article Abstract:
Dragon Systems was started not in a garage, but in the living room of Janet and James Baker in 1982 in Massachusetts. The company is still based in Newton, Mass., and is the speech-recognition software maker with the largest market share, 36% compared with IBM's 31%. The U.S. Defense Dept. was an early customer. With an investment of $26.5 million from Seagate Technology, the company improved its product from one with pauses required between each word to one that is more natural. As a result of its continued success and even profitability, it is going to go public sometime soon.
