Expert team monitors Web's security holes
Article Abstract:
The Computer Emergency Response Team in a meeting last November identified 'distributed denial of service,' or DDOS, as a potentional weakness in the Web. In DDOS hackers send programs to vulnerable servers across the Internet. Then, when these programs are triggered, they in turn send messages to the targeted server. Eventually the server cannot respond to this deluge of requests and shuts down, as happend at Yahoo, E*Trade and other sites this week. There are 87 CERT locations worldwide working with software and network companies to identify and fix viruses and other problems.
