Earnings gains seen for many software firms; large makers of products for personal computers helped by surging sales
Article Abstract:
Revenues for publishers of microcomputer software should report strong financial results for the quarter ending Sep 1991, in part due to new product sales. Benefitting from strong sales of Windows operating system and applications software, Microsoft Corp earnings may be 73 cents a share, up 55 percent from $88 million, or 47 cents a share. After several down quarters, Lotus Development Corp is also expected to report strong results. One analyst predicts that Lotus, which in Sep 1991 shipped a long-awaited Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet software for Windows, will report net quarterly income of $19 million, or 42 cents a share: more than double the $9 million, or 20 cents a share, reported the year previous. For the quarter ending Oct 26, 1991, Novell Inc could report a 50 percent increase in earnings and a 28 percent increase in revenue from the year previous. Makers of software for larger computers such as mainframes will not fare as well because the market trend is toward downsized client-server computing and because consumers are not buying big-ticket items.

New Lotus 1-2-3 may revive firm's sales
Article Abstract:
Lotus Development Corp hopes to revive sales when its Lotus 1-2-3 3.1 spreadsheet software goes on sale Sep 10, 1990. About two-thirds of Lotus' revenues come from 1-2-3 sales, but its market share has fallen from more than 70 percent in 1989 to about 65 percent in 1990. Rivals Borland International and Microsoft Inc have been aggressively pushing their own spreadsheet programs. Lotus' 4th qtr 1990 revenues will depend heavily on how well the $595 Version 3.1 is accepted. The popularity of Microsoft's Windows graphical user interface could impact the consumer appeal of 1-2-3 3.1.
