Haiti was troubled by violence and unrest following a controversial speech by outgoing Pres Jean Bertrand-Aristide and the announcement that the election to replace him will be held Dec 17, 1995. Former premier Rene Preval, backed by Aristide, is considered the favorite in the election.

Taiwan's President Lee wins first Democratic election; victory seen as blow to China
Article Abstract:
Lee Teng-hui won 54% of the vote to be elected as Taiwan's president on Mar 23, 1996. Relations between Taiwan and China have been strained as Taiwan's international presence has increased, and China enacted several military exercises to affect the outcome of the election in Mar 1996.
