Election reform bill enacted

The Italian parliament approved a compromise political reform bill on Aug 4, 1993. The bill would allot 75% of parliament seats to distinct constituencies and 25% according to proportional representation. The old strictly proportional system was blamed for political corruption.

The Olive Tree coalition received 45% of the vote for the Chamber of Deputies and 41% of the vote for the Senate in elections held Apr 21, 1996 in Italy. Olive Tree leader Romano Prodi will likely become the premier if he forms an alliance with the Reconstructed Communists.
