Electric utility (west) industry
Article Abstract:
Merger activity has continued in the electric utility industry in the western US during 1999 and over one-third of the companies in this are involved in combinations, leveraged buyouts, or acquisitions. However, investors who are seeking dividends and income will find some good values in this industry due to lower stock price performance. Rising interest rates have caused this industry to perform poorly in 1999 and income quotations have increased as a result.

Article Abstract:
The trend toward convergence by electric utilities and gas companies in the late 1990s in the Western US has increased and the stock prices of many small utilities has remained below buyout prices. Deregulation in the utility industry has made the economic environment more difficult for many smaller companies and many have agreed to be acquired for this reason. Electric utility stocks are weak in 1999, although many of offer yields of 5% or more.
