Ethics programs: make them real
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of corporations are becoming more aware of the need to uphold their core values and align their strategic aims with these goals. According to a book by James Collins and Jerry Poras, successful companies usually have a core ideology that is based on core values and a sense of purpose that goes beyond profit-making. Companies can ensure the success of their ethics program by making ethics training more realistic through case studies and dilemmas that are pertinent to the organization. They should also consider offering onsite support to employees, manifest the commitment of senior management to ethics, and integrate ethical conduct and integrity into performance evaluations. Moreover, corporations should educate employees about their individual ethical responsibility and maintain a uniform ethical program in the organization.

Chief financial officers (CFO's) who can think strategically are in high demand in the current volatile corporate environment. Companies need CFO's who can weather hostile takeovers and leveraged buyouts. The demand is especially great in high technology industries. Corporate controllers are facing more difficulties in seeking new employments due to recent streamlining of many corporations at the middle management level. Career opportunities in the accounting field are shifting to electronic data processing audits, and computer skills are now essential.
