Excite, a Web directory service, in a 2-year deal with Netscape
Article Abstract:
Excite said it would pay Netscape $70 million for the two-year right to provide a small portion of the search services and other information for Netscape's Navigator browser software and Netcenter, the Netscape World Wide Web home page. Terms also call for both companies to share revenue beyond the $70 million mark, and Netscape will receive less than 5% of on-line directory service Excite's stock. The Navigator search button will route users to Excite's search engine 25% of the time, and to Netscape's search engine 25% of the time. Other directory services will pay Netscape for the remaining 50% of traffic. Another condition requires Excite to furnish information for channels on topics such as arts and automobiles. Netscape and Excite, both of which rank among the top five in Web site traffic, could compete directly at the end of the arrangement.

Where does Microsoft want you to go today?
Article Abstract:
Microsoft plans to enter the online sevices market with a new offering, MSN. This search engine, which is really more of a home Web page with multiply links to other sites, is an attempt by Microsoft to stitch together it's diverse online and entertainment offerings into a coherent service. This new service will be run as a distinct business unit within Microsoft under the aegis of Steve Ballmer. It remains to be seen if Microsoft can avoid the pitfalls that sank its earlier attempt to offer an online service.
