Expanding into Fault Tolerance - New NCR Enhancements Aimed at "V" Users
Article Abstract:
NCR has announced a variety of enhancements to its 8500 and 8600 line of mainframe computers, all centered around NCR's new incremental architecture. Incremental architecture enables multiple 8500 and or 8600 systems to communicate and permits host processors to serve as electronic mailboxes for system messages. The heart of NCR's incremental architecture is an electronic switch, called a dynamic channel director (DCD), that permits up to eight host processors to be linked. Sharing access to common peripherals and an instant ready made that ensures up-time, is also possible using new software within the VRX operating system, known as Interhost Management Facility (IHMF). This allows users to make economically justified decisions as to fault tolerance.
