Exporter gets sensitive to market pressures; when the Asian market came to a sudden halt, a labelling-machine company went stateside
Article Abstract:
Tronics, the pressure-sensitive label machine manufacturer, first experienced the Asian economic crisis in Oct 1997 when exports dropped 30%. Asian companies did not want to purchase new equipment. This experience was not new to Tronics partners Keiran Harford, Richard Latham and John Gilmour. The domestic market had gone flat in 1990, thus leading to development of Asian markets. Tronics decided to expand its North American base and spent $480,000 on a Chicago office. The depreciation of the Australian dollar helped the company offer products at prices 30-40% lower than US competition. It expects 1998-99 sales to reach $3.5 million is US dollars.

New 'Australian made' rules labelled a mess
Article Abstract:
The Trade Practices Act amendments that make a distinction between Australian MAde and Product of Australia labels are seen as confusing. The textile industry finds the label regulations difficult to adhere to. Consumer groups feel that the labels do not provide enough information to judge the country of origin. The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is hoping to revive the Australian Made logo.
