FRC comments on derivatives
Article Abstract:
The FASB has released a proposed statement that would set standards on accounting for derivatives and similar financial instruments and for hedging processes. The Financial Reporting Committee of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) issued its position on the FASB exposure draft and expects to participate in a public hearing pertaining to the standardization effort. The committee finds the proposal too much of a departure from the existing accounting model, replacing justifiable and understandable hedging practices without really improving anything significantly. It disagrees with the idea that reporting derivatives on the balance sheet calls for the abandonment of SFAS 80 deferral/basis adjustment accounting and the removal of synthetic instrument accounting practice. The committee likewise does not favor a hedging approach that makes fair value hedge accounting inapplicable to insurance contracts, leases and held-to-maturity investments.

On the dilatability of subjective time
Article Abstract:
Research determined subjective time perception under conditions of complete isolation. Findings show that during isolation, time perception becomes altered, which is reflected in changes in duration of the sleep-wake cycle. Some subjects alternate between long and short desynchronizations or 40 and 12 hours of wakefulness, respectively. However, despite these changes, individuals still believed that they adhered to the normal 24 hour regimen. These results can be associated to the two aspects of subjective time, namely, personal tempo which is constant and personal experience of time intervals which is subject to perceptual changes.
