Falling Yen creates painful dilemma for U.S. marketers in Japan
Article Abstract:
Although Japan's slow process of deregulation has finally opened more opportunities for US investment, the opening comes at a time when the falling value of the Japanese yen is forcing US marketers to choose between either raising prices with the risk of losing hard-won market share or maintain current prices and lose profit. This raise-prices-or-cut-profit dilemma was faced by Japanese exporters only three years previously when the yen was too strong. While US companies involved in finance continue to do well in Japan's economy, those US companies whose costs are in US dollars, the yen's fall continues to threaten hard-earned profits. Thus far, many US investors are preferring to raise prices and risk the loss of market share.

Germany's Bosch auto-parts makers in Japan team up

Amid consolidation in global auto industry, German auto-parts maker, Robert Bosch GmbH is to team up with Japanese auto-parts makers Nabco Ltd., Nippon ABS Ltd. and Jidosha Kiki Co. in a joint-venture named Bosch Braking System Japan. Bosch will retain a 33.4% stake in the new company, which will develop and market the technology for ABS and breaking systems. The joint-venture is indicative of an opening of Japan's traditionally closed attitude about working with foreign partners.

Business sentiment declines slightly in Japan
Article Abstract:
The Iraq War and concerns about Japan's already weakened economy drove business sentiment down further in the latest survey taken by the Bank of Japan. The results coincide with economic forecasts that see Japan sliding back into recession.
