Family connection; can old-school CEO and wired progeny bridge Internet gap? Dad is vexed as kids defy his cautious maxims; they say: roll the dice; an office fridge full of beer
Article Abstract:
Dick Michaux, chief executive officer of builder AvalonBay Communities Inc., attempts to relate to what his two children do at two Internet-related start-up firms. His son, Rick, quit his managerial job at Motorola Inc. to become chief executive officer of a seven-person start-up company called Corrigo Inc. that is trying to produce software for Internet-based wireless systems. His daughter, Alison, sells online advertising for Excite At Home Inc., a provider of high-speed Internet service via cable modems. Mr. Michaux is startled by the fact that the new breed of entrepreneurs created by the Internet boom generally disregards the accepted theories of business management. Today's start-up firms are no longer concerned with profitability and the acquisition of 'hard assets', yet somehow the entrepreneurs who founded or run these companies manage to turn themselves into millionaires by selling these companies or their stock holdings as investors rush to buy firms associated with the Internet.
