Time Warner plans electronic 'superhighway'
Article Abstract:
Time Warner plans to build a high-capacity electronic network that will be used for interactive games, home shopping, telephone services and video-on-demand. The first two-way system will be built in suburban Orlando, FL, and should be up and running by early 1994. Time Warner's plan is expected to hurt the regional Bell operating companies' business because the network would enable customers to link to their long-distance carriers directly, without passing through regional phone networks. Local Bell companies also fear that government regulations will restrict them from entering the lucrative video-on-demand and interactive multimedia market. The telecommunications market's revenue is totaled at $80 billion and is expected to double by 2000.

Scientists doubt phones cause brain tumors
Article Abstract:
Scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Cancer Institute and the Federal Communications Commission tell Capitol Hill legislators that portable cellular telephones probably do not cause brain cancer. The scientists say that there is a slight possibility that the phones accelerate the growth of existing cancers. However, the scientists say that more research is needed on the possible physiological effects of radio-frequency electromagnetic waves. Concern over the public health issue was touched off in Jan 1993 when a Florida man appeared on national television to discuss his lawsuit, in which he claims that his wife's use of a portable phone contributed to her fatal brain cancer.
