An initial contingent of some 1,800 US Marines arrived in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Dec 9, 1992, as part of 'Operation Restore Hope,' a United Nations-sponsored, US-led mission to aid the country. Gunfire was heard during the day of the Marine arrival, but the US force encountered no resistance.

Rival Somali warlords sign peace pact

A peace accord was signed on Dec 11, 1992, by the two most powerful warlords in Somalia. Mohammed Farah Aidid and Ali Mahdi Mohammed signed an accord with the assistance of US envoy to Somalia Robert Oakley. On Dec 16, 1992, US troops began moving food convoys into Baidoa, Somalia.

The UN Security Council authorized attacks on General Mohammed Farah Aidid, a warlord in Mogadishu, Somalia, by US and allied forces on Jun 12-16, 1993. Pakistani peace-keeping troops killed about 20 people when they shot at protesters.
