U.S. woman sentenced to life in prison

Peru's Supreme Council of Military Justice sentenced Berenson to life in prison on Jan 11, 1996, for her involvement with the rebel Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement. Twenty-two other members of the group were also convicted. The US and human rights groups protested the conviction.

Abimael Guzman Reynoso, the head of the Shining Path guerrilla movement, was captured in a raid Sep 12, 1992. Guzman will be tried for treason in a military court and faces a maximum of life imprisonment if convicted.
