Flexible salary packaging gives employees a sky-high level of choice

Ansett Airlines introduced a flexible salary packaging program in late 1996 for its 900 pilots and 350 executives. These employees can now decide how their income will be split between cash and non-cash benefits. Certain salary packages allow employees to be paid in a more tax effective manner while keeping administrative costs down. The airline also retains valuable employees.

New watchdog for doi-it-yourself funds

The Australian Taxation Office is expected to take over superannuation fund regulation in July 1998, prompting consultants to expect resurrection of a little-used tax penalty. Section 288a enables a tax commissioner to take half the assets of a do-it-yourself superannuation fund program if it has failed to comply with regulations, effectively doubling the ATO's authority.
