Focused scheduling in proportionate flowshops
Article Abstract:
Research into proportionate flow shops, shops that process jobs on machines with varying operating speeds such that job completion times are proportionate, focusing on bottlenecks in processing that are associated with the slowest machines in the shop (the machines with the longest job completion times), indicates that the total tardiness of jobs and their related costs can be minimized using an idle time rule, which is one result of the 'focused approach' research performed. The model and decision rule established by the research is applied to several flow shop situations with varying numbers of machines in the shop networks to demonstrate the validity of the model and decision rule.

Sequencing rules and due-date assignments in a job shop
Article Abstract:
Scheduling in a job shop environment is analyzed for the relationship between assigning job priorities and due dates. Average tardiness measures are used to determine the effectiveness of the job scheduling procedures. Improving average tardiness is also analyzed according to the following factors: dispatching rules, average flow allowances, due-date assignment methodologies, and assessments of job progress. In general the research concludes that: priorities should be assigned according to operations involved, rather than jobs to be completed; slack-based scheduling systems are preferable to allowance-based scheduling systems; and due-dates should reflect work content.

The single machine early-tardy problem
Article Abstract:
The problems associated with scheduling a set of jobs on a single machine to reduce early and tardy costs were examined. Two dispatch priority rules were developed and were found to have a higher performance level than known heuristics that ignored early costs. A more sophisticated technique called Filtered Beam Search was also developed that was able to search a number of solution paths in parallel. Results showed that the technique was consistent in providing near-optimal solutions with a relatively small search tree.
