Both food wholesalers and foodservice distributors, which together comprise the food wholesalers industry, are doing well in the 1st qtr of 1999 with the US economy in its ninth year of expansion. Foodservice distributors are expected to grow for the next three to five years, but the food wholesale segment will have less success even though decent sales and profit gains are forecast through 2002-2004. Several stocks in this industry are timely for 1999 and some have good growth potential for the next three to five years.

Acquisitions have allowed several of the companies which comprise the food wholesaling industry to grow in 1999, and this trend is expected to continue in the future. The environment for the wholesaling segment has altered due to consolidation among supermarkets, but the conditions for food service distributors are much better due to demographics. Two of these stocks are timely for 1999 and the year 2000 and several more have potential for the next three to five years.

Food wholesalers are often not affected by negative economic conditions, and this seems the case in late 2001, as several have shown gains. Foodservice distributors are also expected to grow, as well. These stocks are timely for late 2001 and early 2002.
