Ford's great hope

The Australian automobile industry is continuing to grow at record levels in 2004, and the trend is mainly due to the steady demand for the sports utility vehicles (SUV). To tap the market and to strengthen its weak SUV range Ford has developed Territory, for June 2004 launch, at a cost of $500 million and hopes it can take on the likes of Toyota and Mitsubishi and the growing Korean car makers' Competition.

Article Abstract:
The five percent reduction in tariffs by the car industry of Australia on passenger cars due on January 1, 2005, is discussed. The ability of the local car industry to absorb this cut is described and Leon Daphane, the chairman of Australia's biggest import-only car company, Nissan Australia, believes that there would be a stall in the market coinciding with the fall in tariff rates.
