Fostering risk taking in research and development: the importance of a project's terminal value
Article Abstract:
Firms engaged in new product development face a variety of challenges in managing the R&D process, not the least of which is the ambivalent effect of likelihood of success on project decision making. The conflicting effects make it appear that risk taking within organizations do not vary substantially with success likelihood. On the other hand, a high terminal value can have an unequivocally positive impact on risk taking in project decisions such that the team's propensity to take risk improves. Thus, firms can overcome the ambivalent effect of likelihood of success on project decision making by focusing on the terminal value of an R&D project.

A system dynamics view of the decomposition of research and development (R&D) efforts into explorative and exploitative activities and the resultant knowledge-specific and performance outcomes from the decision to focus on one type of activity or another. Four factors are shown to affect the relative value of innovative knowledge to the organization.
