French Socialist Jospin tops first-round president poll; Jospin to face Chirac in run-off

Jospin received 23.3% of the vote while Chirac received 20.8% in elections held Apr 23, 1995, and the runoff election will be held May 7, 1995. Jospin's first-place finish was a surprise because Chirac led public opinion polls shortly before the election. The dominant issues are addressed.

Juppe unveils new government

Juppe hoped to reduce the deficit and reform the welfare system in France by appointing a new cabinet. The number of government positions fell from 41 to 32. Juppe resigned earlier at the request of French Pres Jacques Chirac, who then asked Juppe to help establish a new administration.

Chirac wins French presidential election, defeating socialist Jospin

Rally for the Republic nominee Jacques Chirac was elected president of France with 52.6% of the vote over Socialist Party candidate Lionel Jospin, who received 47.4% of the vote. Chirac said that his first priority would be to reduce the French jobless rate, which stood at 12.3%.
