From experience: where does your new technology fit into the marketplace?
Article Abstract:
Most companies that conduct product research and development (R&D) discover or create new technologies and products either deliberately or as an offshoot of R&D. These technologies and products can be profitable if the companies screen them using technology, consumer needs, economics and time as criteria for their development. The screening process should involve marketers and planners if marketable products and technologies are to be developed.

From experience: how Canon and Sony drive product innovation through networking and application-focused R&D
Article Abstract:
Case studies of research and development (R&D) efforts at Canon and Sony showed both firms nurture product innovation via strategic and job rotation of R&D engineers and application-focused R&D. Both firms also directly relocate development teams from R&D to production and adopt intensive networking with external centers of excellence and major suppliers. The application-driven R&D led to a more intensive market orientation of the R&D efforts.
