Powerboats, picket lines: strikers are getting by: at G.M. life styles worth defending
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. is still plagued by striking employees who are not in a particularily bad shape. They earn $69,000 a year and are anxious to protect their lifestyle. They live in an area where the average house costs $93,500. Some of them are enjoying a vacation, taking out the cabin cruiser and returning to shore for a couple hours a week of strike duty. One employee purchased a $650 cupboard. No one is hurting too much.

General Motors plans to build new, effecient assembly plants: would need fewer workers, a worry for union
Article Abstract:
General Motors Corp. (GM) is planning to build a new generation of extremely effecient assembly plants in North America. The United Automobile Workers Union is concerned because these new plants will need about half the number of workers as current plants. Much of the work will be done by nonunion suppliers. GM wants to transform itself into a company that manufacturers cars and trucks but not parts.
