Home builders begin to see the advantages of consolidation
Article Abstract:
As Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. acquires Lewis Homes for $409 million, the industry takes a new look at this untraditional business move in what has been considered an entrepreneurial area. Lewis, privately held by four brothers, has been the leader in California and Nevada new home construction. The company now looks forward to the economies of scale this acquisition will provide it. Kaufman & Broad is trying a new strategy like Dell Computers, build to order instead of build and then try to sell. The company plans to build 21,000 homes in 1999.
